Free food and an important message about food waste. I am now eating a rather nice vegetarian curry.

The ghost of the Coach and Horses

There once was a pub….., originally uploaded by spinneyhead.

A few months ago, I posted the photo above. I’ve been meaning to get in touch with the Pubs of Manchester blog to ask if they knew the name of the pub I’d found the remnants of. They beat me to it- it used to be the Coach and Horses.

David Thomas Jones is perhaps better known as Davy Jones of the Monkees. We found this headstone dedicated to him in Gorton Cemetery. He was born in Openshaw and appeared in Coronation Street before heading to the States to become a heart throb, so it’s an appropriate place for a memorial.

There are some surprisingly beautiful little nooks within a short ride of Gorton.

Plan A is to destroy everything of any value, isn’t it?

Funding cuts have lead to Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, the National Media Museum in Bradford and the National Rail Museum in York facing closure.

The cuts were part of this moronic “austerity” plan the Government is so keen on, despite the fact it’s not only not working but making things worse. Sneakily privatising the NHS (something almost everyone in the cabinet will benefit from financially) and bringing in policies that kill people are far worse than the closure of a few museums, but it gives us a taste of the wasteland that’s going to be left behind by this bunch of morons.

I just watched the parade on Deansgate. It’s still going on and hasn’t finished its return loop yet. This is the Air Training Corps, making me fear for the future of our armed forces by going the wrong way.

More pictures when I’ve edited and uploaded the ones from the camera.

Chorlton Coffee Festival. A Coffee Festival in Chorlton……………… Coffee

I probably shouldn’t go to this, too much caffeine plays havoc with the ulcer.

This place is directly opposite work and I only noticed yesterday just how
very 1970s the sign is.

The elephant god (Ganesh?) is out of place amongst all the recycling and eco stalls, but it watches over them anyway.

Pop up bikes

If it were on the other side of the centre Pop Up Bikes might become my new favourite coffee shop. It’s an excellent idea- a cafe in a railway arch with bike parking and room to work on your ride included.

Do you speak Mancunian?

Linguists at the University of Manchester have discovered that their city boasts a population that speaks at least 153 languages, making it one of the world’s most diverse places linguistically.

via Manchester is the most linguistically diverse city in Europe | UK news | The Observer.

I think this is awesome, though I sometimes have problems speaking my one language (I swear, one day Charlotte and I are going to have a conversation completely in grunts).  Obviously the reactionarie are going to tell me that living in a world class city is somehow a bad thing.
