I'm currently working on a 1960s Camaro to go with the Post Apocalypse Pony. If I find a 70s/80s version of the model maybe I can make it looks like this.
I've not put any bullet proof plating on the cars I've built so far, and that would be an obvious addition.

The Dixi was basically an Austin 7 made under licence in Germany. I'm thinking of turning it into a rod, so this post about hotrod Austin 7s was interesting. I may use some of the stuff available from Scale Link in 1:24th, which includes a Rover V8, the quintessential british rodding motor.

Tanks from the Second World War are still being pulled out of the lakes around St. Petersburg. If I remember my history correctly, the city was resupplied across the frozen lakes during the winter phases of the siege and at times the ice broke. The site refers to it as a "BT" tank. You can get BT5 or BT7 tanks in 1:35th scale from Zvezda, or BT5, BT7 or BT2 from Unimodel in 1:72nd. A salvage operation like this would make for an interesting diorama.

Kei cars are a class designed to get around Japanese tax and insurance legislation. They're tiny, the light weight making them nippy around town despite their one or two cylinder engines.
Jalopnik drove a trio of kei cars belonging to an American fan, then took anexample of Mazda's first ever four wheeled vehicle to a dealer so they could compare it to the manufacturer's current models.
If you want to model these cute little things, then Arii's Owner's Club range has a number of them, and the three wheeled delivery trucks and other classic Japanese vehicles of the 60s and 70s that you keep seeing in Kung Fu movies.

Whilst going through the archives of Spinneyhead, I've found a few posts and links that might be of interest to modellers-
Fetch!
The Russian dog anti tank mine.
Captured
In the dynamic flow of a battlefield equipment can get lost or captured. A quick trip through captured and repurposed weaponry-
The world of captured planes
Captured Planes
Captured Allied planes (Warning- cheesey beyond belief music, which is a shame because there are some very useful images here.)
A collection of pieces about captured B-17s
Fleet Air Arm planes captured by the Axis
A gallery of tanks captured by the Germans
Modelling a captured Russian KV-2
Israel made good use of captured T54s and T55s and various other vehicles.
Russian tank museum, including many captured tanks.
Captured First World War tanks.
Ships captured by the German Navy.
Test Beds
I've just been to the Museum of Science and Industry and checked out the aviation hall. Interesting stuff-
Avro Lancasters were used as flying test beds for jet engines. Video of the tests is online here.
The Avro 707 isn't quite a flying wing, but I have a soft spot for the delta wing planes such as this and the Vulcan.
A picture of the Hafner Rotachute (more) hiding away in the corner of a painting has given me ideas for another novel way to land assault troops. The Germans used similar devices for spotting from U-Boats.
But the most affecting plane in the whole display is still the tiny Yokosuka OHKA, a suicide jet that was pretty much a desperate last gasp from the Japanese.
Wing and a Prayer
The Me-163 'Komet' was quite an astounding beast. I alluded to a similar plane when the Wasp squadron visited Dreamland (Chapter Three, blink and you miss it). Flight Journal has a long interview with one of the Komet's chief test pilots.
It also has to be remembered that the Germans weren't the only ones experimenting with new and unusual aeroplane designs. The Allies' first jet plane was the Gloster Whittle, a pre-cursor to the Meteor and test bed for jet engines.
The 'Hiller-copter' and Landgraf H-2 were early twin bladed helicopter designs.
America experimented with flying wings in designs such as the XP-56 and XB-35, which I've mentioned many times before, but there were also experiments with gliders along the same lines.
The Brits also experimented with flying wings, as well as canard and tandem wing designs.
Even the Swedes got in on the act with the Saab 21A.
And also- Engines of the Red Army

Mostly, when modellers depict abandoned buildings they're that way because of battle damage. However, there are corners of every town with buildings that have just been vacated, fair subjects for the railway layouts and non-military dioramas. So these pictures of a Russian ghost town, abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union, might be useful reference material for the effects of 20 years abandonment.

Hitler's only aircraft carrier was the Graf Zeppelin. Despite being launched in 1938 it never saw service. The Red Army captured and recovered the ship after it was scuttled in the Polish port of Szczecin in April 1945. Contrary to agreements to sink or destroy Nazi vessels, the Russians used it to transport looted equipment, and later as target practice for their dive bombers. After this battering the ship disappeared and its exact location was never known until recently, when an oil exploration survey found the ship on the bed of the Baltic Sea near the Bay of Gdansk.

I built this Ford F150 with a machine gun in the pickup bed as a joke. I was contemplating a Mad Max style future set of models, a black humour apocalypse.
It seems that real life is a step or two ahead of me, as these pictures of gun trucks in Iraq show. It's not so funny any more, but still tempting as a subject.

A great way to lose a couple of hours on a rainy Sunday evening. The SoCal Car Culture Model Car Resources has a load of links to, mostly American, garage kit manufacturers. I'm dreaming of having enough time, money and space to make a few of the things I found. There are occasional dead links, but not so many.

The next two big builds for Small Scale Customs will be 1:76th scale Ford Popular and Model Y hot rods. I've ordered the whitemetal kits today and it's time to start looking for ideas and photo reference.

This review of the new HaT models of the Renault FT 17 WW1 tank mentions that a couple were recently found in Afghanistan by US troops. I had visions of the little beasts puttering around the streets of Kabul with Talibanis in them, but the truth is they were found in a field of scrap.
One or both of the tanks were sent back to the States to be restored and displayed. I think the discovery of the little treasures amidst so much rubbish is worthy of a diorama. It would probably require the more detailed RPM versions (1, 2) and could utilise Preiser's modern US infantry.
More information on the find, and other Afghan FT 17s here (bottom of the page, but the other stuff's interesting as well.

Today I finally received the Airfix Bristol Bloodhound model I won on EBay a month and a half ago (it did have to come surface mail from the States). I don't know where this fits into the to-do pile of kits, but thought some reference photos were required.
The APMA has this page and some pictures of completed versions of the kit, and other Bristol aircraft, on this page.
A shot from the Transport Archive of a Bloodhound on the Woomera proving grounds. It might be worth trying to reproduce the circular base it's mounted on- they're shown on the box art as well.
Another picture of a preserved Bloodhound.
Two Bloodhounds and lots of other aircraft on this page.

There are a lot of sites out there like Jalopnik that regularly serve up links to images and articles of interest to car modellers.
Recent highlights include-
A 1,000 horsepower Toyota Supra, which would put those Fast & Furious models to shame.
A customised '35 Ford pickup from Australia. It's powered by LPG, but the interesting thing for any modeller is that they're right hand drive- probably a major modification on any of the kits available.
The "Big T" model T that inspired a classic kit.
Building the perfect Demolition Derby car Anyone who got this right on a model could be looking at a show winner.
The Asphalt Invitationals. Lots of lovely rods to inspire you.
Automotive interiors from the '70s on.
And more and more. Jalopnik's the only car blog I subscribe to, but I bet there are a load more out there serving up this sort of inspiration as well.

Because some of the original equipment was replaced or replicated from scratch, you can't really use this rebuild of an M22 Locust air portable tank as a source of internal reference photos. However, from the outside the rebuilt tank is nearly identical to the original and is used in Second World War re-enactments.
More reference pictures here. 3D model here. Profile here.
But are there any models of it? A 1997 issue of Finescale Modeller has an article about building a model, but it's not online. Spirit Games do them in 1:300th scale for wargaming. And Commanders Series were thinking about it but shelved the project.

Summer is here, so there's little modelling being done. I'm too busy with things like the allotment. However, as I am guesting on the UAV blog, I thought I'd see how this relatively new type of plane was represented for modellers.
The first stop on this tour is Unicraft, which is pretty much your one stop shop for UAV modelling needs. They have 1/72nd scale models of-
Bell EAGLE EYE, Boeing X-45A UCAV, Boeing X-36 UAV, Boeing BIRD OF PREY, "Piloted UCAV"(?), DRAGON WARRIOR, Northrop-Grumman X-47A Pegasus UCAV-N, GA Prowler II, RQ-1 Predator, RQ-2 Pioneer, RQ-3 DarkStar, RQ-4 Global Hawk, RQ-5 Hunter, MQ-9A Predator B / ALTAIR, ALTUS and Aurora THESEUS. They also do the Boeing SENSOR CRAFT in 1/144th (though that link wasn't working when I tried). For British modellers, Hannants stock a few Unicraft kits.
With that fairly exhaustive list you hardly need to go anywhere else, but I thought I'd have a look anyway.
French company Sharkit does a NASA HyperIII, actually a remotely piloted test bed for lifting body designs, but a UAV precursor of sorts. They also have a few other UAV grandparents in the North American X10 and Vought Regulus 1 (more of an early cruise missile really). And there are a number of unrelated but interesting models such as the Davy Crocket atomic gun and Bell rocket belt (in either 1/12th or 1/35th).
Wings models do 1/48th and 1/72nd scale vacform model of the GTD-21, a Kennedy era reconnaisance drone.
I'm sure there are more, but if I carry on looking I'm going to lose a day to finding ever more obscure and fascinating model companies.

The tale of a T-37 training jet's retirement.
The commander of the 8th - Navy Cmdr. Brian Osborn - is an old friend of retired Navy Capt. Rance Dunmire of Pueblo. Osborn also knows Dunmire is vice president of the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society and is always on the lookout for classic military aircraft for the Pueblo museum.
So telephone calls took place, paperwork was filed, and last Friday, Dunmire was at Vance having a sparkling T-37 loaded on a trailer for shipment to Pueblo. The little Tweet had been in use training pilots as recently as last month.
Trainers don't have the glamour of combat planes, but they're still an interesting subject. The Tweet was modified into the A-37 light bomber, so you could have the siblings sat next to each other on the runway.
