The Wigan show was much larger than the last time I attended in 2007. It was in the same building, but ccupied two halls rather than one. Copious photos were taken, and can be seen in the Wigan Model Railway Exhibition 2009 set on Flickr.

Mondays are my designated 3d designing days, though for the last couple of weeks I've been struggling up the steep initial learning curve of Blender. I've reached a level where I can create what I want using boolean operations such as union, though that doesn't always produce printable objects. I have an extra day to dedicate to 3d this week, so I'll see if I can move on to sculpting rather than gluing.
This Monday I made three bus shelters, which are available from my Shapeways shop-

The small shelter without an advertising box comes in a four pack. It needs painting and glazing- acetate should glue easily to the backs of the supports. I may design a map/timetable transfer to go on the incorporated board.
The small shelter with an advertising box comes in a two pack. I may design advert transfers for it, in the meantime you can always print out your own to fit. Again, it will need painting and glazing.
The large shelter is available singly or in a two pack. It's cheaper per unit in the two pack, but you may need just the one for the stop right outside your station. Painting and glazing required, of course.
I'm going to take a break from model railway stuff for a week or so to build wargaming bits to be sold at the upcoming Gamecon in Manchester.

The plan is to produce a few simple models every week and build up a wide range of street furniture for model railway builders. I'll be ordering copies of my own products, some of which will go to magazines for promotion and some I will build myself and record here. In fact the first batch should print and ship this week, so next week I'll be painting bins.
Today and yesterday I designed and uploaded some benches-

The cantilever bench comes as a set of five, the other two as sets of four. The price will depend upon which material you use, but includes taxes and shipping charges. There's a minimum order of $25. None of the models will exceed that individually, but the idea is for you to be able to pick and choose street furniture until you've got enough, with enough variety, for your layout.
The benches, and the bins I designed last week, are available from my Shapeways shop.

I have recently started uploading 3d models to a site called Shapeways, where you can order them and get solid copies. The 3d printing process allows for some fine detailing, so I'll be taking advantage of that. Currently available in my Shapeways shop are a few items of street furniture, and a casket for hearses or graveside scenes. I shall be adding more on a weekly basis (though that may become fortnightly as the models become more complex) with enough variety that it will be easy to uniquely decorate your town.

I may have got a little too excited when I found out Oxford Diecast were doing a Ford Pop in 1:76th scale. And I don't think I was the only one. When I went to pick some up today I got the last two in the shop.
The first thing I did was take one of them apart to see what the prospects are like for customising. Oxford's cars are held together with screws rather than the rivets that so many others use, so this was easy enough. The bumpers are moulded as part of the body. They'll have to be filed off and there'll need to be a bit of sculpting to make that convincing. The interior is a pretty basic tub. I'll probably build a whole new one, particularly if I go with early plans to build a drag or Pro-Street car.
It's time to dig out the old copies of Street Machine and Custom Car for inspiration.

I'm afraid I can't tell you much about the Manchester Model Railway Club show because I was slightly out of synch, having just flown back from the US a few hours before attending.
It took place in one of the Co-op's many buildings in Manchester, in a pair of halls also used for the CAMRA real ale festival. Overall it was larger than the Wigan show, but not by much. I took notes of which layouts I photographed and when I find the notebook I'll go back and name all of them in the Flickr gallery for the event.

Rather than spending all week putting up all the photos from the Wigan Model Railway Show and then posting the gallery, I thought I'd do the job in chunks. So here's my first batch of photos.
There were fewer modern image layouts this year than last, and those that were in evidence tended to display some quirky humour. There were also more foreign subjects, including a very nice French one and an American railroad town in HO with tongue in cheek names and notes.
The first batch of photos-

I've got a box of toy soldiers that I bought on EBay with the intention of painting them up and leaving in little scenes all around town. However, as with so many projects, I never quite had the time to do it and they sit there still, awaiting release.
The person who runs the little people blog has managed to get around to painting and placing his guys all around London. They look to be model railway figures by Preiser or Faller, in 1:72nd or 1:87th scale, with clear bases where needed. I hope they're being superglued in place so that more people can appreciate them.
Now then. I've got some aliens and marines somewhere just itching to have a fight in the park......

Internet Modeller has an interesting article entitled Stereolithography & the Future of Aftermarket about the use of 3d printing for prototyping and even production of aftermarket components. I've been pondering this for a while. When I get more experienced at 3d modelling I'd like to use it to produce a bunch of figure masters for model railway characters. I've even got a list somewhere of suitable subjects. Now all I need is to sit down adn master Blender or Hexagon, the two 3d packages I own.

Tim Hall on what annoys him about some exhibition model rail layouts and other layouts that work-
* Layouts that look good but run badly.
* Architecturally impossible structures, especially bridges.
* Obvious anachronisms.
* Layouts where 50% of the locos is one-off depot specials or short-lived prototypes, which would never have been seen together at the same time and place.
* No attempt to run prototypical train formations despite the correct stock being available off the shelf (N gauge layouts seem to be bad offenders at this; how many malformed Virgin Cross-Country locomotive-hauled sets have you seen?)
* Unpainted brass kettles (I'm surprised how often you see this on finescale kettle layouts)

For those who remember my post a little while ago, i'm constructing a scale model of the now demolished Rugby Central railway station.
I've started to apply brick paper which was printed out on my rather old HP Deskjet 550C. It's a respectable quality even though all it's capable of is a rather low resolution when compared to todays printers. I think the model is starting to take shape...

The Union Pacific railroad is suing a model company for breach of copyright because their logo appears on scale rolling stock. Lots of aerospace and military corporations are trying to shake down model companies for exorbitant licencing fees, and now the railways are getting in on the act.

I've acquired a few small Fords in the last week, all in 1:76th scale. First up is the Corgi Trackside Ford Transit which I found in the model shop on Saturday. It comes with a ticket declaring it to be number 3406 of 4000, which makes me think twice about doing anything to it. However, I also bought a tub of the MIG Productions Standard Rust pigment and this seems like a perfect candidate for rusting and weathering.

Next up are the Ford Model Y and Pop from John Day. They're cast whitemetal kits intended for model railways, but my plans are to customise them. The bodies are clean with minor flash around the windows and mould lines on the lower edges that will only need a little cleaning up. The close up shots make the surface look pitted, but this will disappear with a coat of primer and a bit of buffing. Sprayed with car paint and with a few details picked out, these would look good on a 30-40s (Y) or 50s (Pop) layout.
Interior detail is minimal and the underbodies are a bit plain. The Y has a driver figure but, well, he looks like the elephant man. For my customs I'm going to try to build new chassis for them and fit new seats, steering wheels etc. but for their intended use these are minor quibbles.
I'd recommend these models for the period railway modeller. How they'll suit my slightly mad hot-rodding plans remains to be seen.
You can get a list of John Day's products by sending a stamped addressed envelope to John Day, 104 St. Peter's Close, Moreton-on-Lugg, Hereford, HR4 8DW. Mention that you read about him on spinneyhead.co.uk/Scale

Ian has asked me to show the progression of my model railway, as it's 18 feet long it's an extremely long term project. It's only been in existence for a month or so but most of the models are from my last layout about 10 years or so ago.

With Ian talking about Spinney Street, I thought it was a good time to mention how i've tackled a similar situation. The "tarmac" i've trialed here is the surface of a Wickes kitchen worktop (available at £25 for a 3m length!) which I had left over and seems to work rather adequately.
I'm a fan of the free texture databases that can be found on the internet - the pavement is a texture rescaled and tiled in a desktop publishing program. The texture is available here. It's raised an ice lolly stick width off the road surface to denote a pavement height. I would suspect it's almost in scale as it does look reasonable. The road lines are done in a similar fashion to the paving stones in a DTP package and simply printed out and stuck down.
Just the roof of the station building to cover in a so far undecided texture and maybe respray the "MerseyBus" liveried bus into Magic Bus livery.

This is the story of the South Bend Southern Railroad, a fictional railroad between South Bend Ind & Fulton Ky. The line is owned by the CN Railroad which uses it to bypass the congested rails of Chicago. From South Bend, SBS trains head south to Indy and then to Louisville Ky. From there trains head to western Ky where they connect to CN at Fulton. As you can see from the attached pics, work has begun on the interstate highway portions of the system.

Dad and I attended this yesterday. Click on the image above to go to the gallery. I managed to distill the photos I took down to 66 worth putting up. I still have a little to learn about taking close up shots with my new camera. I couldn't remember which layouts some of the photos were of, so if you were there and can help out, please leave a comment updating me.
There were a lot of modern image layouts in OO, which Dad wasn't so happy about and nothing, as far as I can remember, set in the period he's doing his layout in (late 40s/ early 50s). The trend interests me because I have a few ideas for products that will fit into the modern era quite well.
There's not a lot of rolling stock, proportionally, in my pictures. This reflects my interest in the architecture and characters. Any layout I made would be more of a large static diorama full of little vignettes.
I didn't pick up much from the trade stands, mostly small detailing items and tools. Langley Models had a "pick 'n mix" section that I delved into for a couple of white metal dogs and some other small items and Signs of the Times provided an RAF temporary hut and a pair of modern policemen. All of these items should soon be appearing in mini dioramas.
