The world's biggest model railway layout
The Telegraph patronisingly calls it a train set, but they do have pictures and a video tour to make up for it.

It's the Miniatur-Wunderland in Hamburg. One day I will visit it.

Working 1:6th scale Corvette V8 engine
Jim Moyer has built a scale replica of a 1964 Corvette engine that really runs. At the moment it has no cooling system, so it can only go for short bursts, but it is an incredible piece of engineering.

The 1.3 million pound Titanic model
Fine Art Models have taken the original plans and construction notes from Harland & Wolff to produce the most authentic model of the Titanic yet. The 1:48th scale model will set you back £1.3million, though there are cheaper 1:192 scale versions being done as a limited edition.

Fine Art Models own page on the Titanic model.

Little cities
Tinselman has a fascinating piece about miniature cities. I'd love to do a huge model of a section of a city, but I'd want to make it imaginary because I'd be putting lots of fantastical and bizarre scenes into it.

Hand made model surf boards
I was looking for surfboards in 1:32nd or 1:24th scale to add to cars. What I found was the Fin Guy, who hand makes 1:3rd scale boards for wall hanging.

Miniature Himeji Castle Build In Mie Prefecture
After the huge Moscow diorama, now there is this 1:23rd scale reproduction of Himeji castle built by a retired Japanese man. The project has taken 19 years and involved inventive use of materials and surreptitious measuring of the original.

There are more pictures here.

Miniature Moscow
This huge model of Moscow dates back to the Soviet era, and is a three dimensional snapshot of the city at the time. It has become increasingly expensive to maintain and was put up for sale for $3million (or maybe $380,000). Someone with 400 square feet to spare bought it last August.
