I linked to the full size bike designs of Olli Erkilla on Two Wheels Good. But if you look at his website you'll find lots of other cool stuff. The Digital Art section has lots of cool customs, mostly based on the good old 2CV. I'm a fan of the Traction Avant coupe shown above, and I have an old Matchbox kit I can make up like it.

This professional customising shop has build photos of many of its projects online. If you know how it's done in real life you can better replicate it in scale.

The Jalopy Journal is an online car magazine specialising in more traditional rods and customs. It also has a busy forum for you to dive into, so you shouldn't be lacking inspiration.

I recently got, from Ebay, this kit of a BMW Dixi.

The Dixi was basically an Austin 7 made under licence in Germany. I'm thinking of turning it into a rod, so this post about hotrod Austin 7s was interesting. I may use some of the stuff available from Scale Link in 1:24th, which includes a Rover V8, the quintessential british rodding motor.

I completed the rat rod T bucket a few weeks ago, but have only just got the photos uploaded.

The engine wiring is fairly basic, just the wires going to the spak plugs, no fuel or coolant lines. The exhaust pipes are aluminium tubing trimmed and superglued to the block, a bit more realistic than the plastic pipes that came with it.

The interior is basic. I didn't add any extra detailing. All the gauges are sporting a very ratty black on black look.

The fuel tank is a drop tank, probably 1:72nd, from the spares bin.

And here's the T from the side. I'm looking for interesting new ways to display my models, this one's going to be mounted in a picture frame, so it can be stood on someone's desk like a photo of the family.
There are a few more photos of the build in the Ratty T set.

A few pictures at Jalopnik of tasty componentry on top class rods. Particularly useful to me as I'm wiring up a Cadillac V8 block on the Ratty T project.

I've become fascinated by rat rods in the last year or so, so when I got a Lindberg model T in 1:32nd scale it seemed natural that I should make something old school.
It's a simple model, so I'll try to keep my modifications to it simple. The first step was to drop the body nearer the ground. As in the real thing, this was done by Z'ing the frame. The chassis is cast as a single piece incorporating the sump and some of the front suspension. The trailing arms helped me line everything back up when I cut through the rails just behind the radiator mount. The thickness of the cut allowed me to insert a section of plastic strip into the gap which gave a firm mount for the step. A similar process was followed at the rear.
The frame rails and suspension have been painted Games Workshop Chaos Black, my flat black of choice. The sump and trailing arms will probably be Boltgun Metal. Everything will get a light coat of rust before the car goes together.

I may have got a little too excited when I found out Oxford Diecast were doing a Ford Pop in 1:76th scale. And I don't think I was the only one. When I went to pick some up today I got the last two in the shop.
The first thing I did was take one of them apart to see what the prospects are like for customising. Oxford's cars are held together with screws rather than the rivets that so many others use, so this was easy enough. The bumpers are moulded as part of the body. They'll have to be filed off and there'll need to be a bit of sculpting to make that convincing. The interior is a pretty basic tub. I'll probably build a whole new one, particularly if I go with early plans to build a drag or Pro-Street car.
It's time to dig out the old copies of Street Machine and Custom Car for inspiration.

I've found a local newsagent with a great selection of magazines that I've not seen anywhere else. I may have to visit once a month to pick up new reads.
This month's mag was Rebel Rodz, dedicated to old school rodz, bikes and tattoos. A great source of inspiration.
Sites mentioned in the mag include-
Chopper Festival.
Festivale de la Gente.
Ink-n-Iron.

Oh those crazy Russians. The GAZ 51 was a Russian workhorse during teh Second World War. Now one of them is being turned into a custom pickup.
Model Wheels do a GAZ 51 in 1:72nd, if you want to emulate the project.

I'm about to start work on another batch of small scale custom cars again. I'm going to try stripping one and giving it a new paint job, so I went looking for instructions and hints. This page at Hot World Customs breaks down quite a few methods. I think I might try using caustic soda because I imagine it's less polluting and easier to store.

Pictures of hot rods belonging to readers of Hot Rod Gazette. As a number of these are very English it may be hard to get models of them in larger scales. But I have a liking of small scale customs, so I may take inspiration.

At the moment I'm collecting, more than making, models. And I don't have the money or the space to do much of that, either.
But that's not going to stop me drawing up a wish list of kit's I'd like to get my hands on or see produced. Quite a few of them are driven by a desire to start painting 54mm figures, particularly Andrea's character series and placing them in dioramas involving relevant vehicles.
1. Arii's Collectors' Series available in the UK. I've developed a crush on these 1:32nd scale curbside models without ever seeing one or reading a review. I'm watching a lot of Kung Fu movies at the moment and I want to put Bruce Lee on a street with a delivery trike behind him and scattered boxes and other debris. I could order the models from Japan, or EBay shops in Australia or Hong Kong, but I'd really like to be able to get them from my local model shop or one of the bigg online shops like Hannants.
2. More of Airfix's 1:32nd scale '60s and '70s saloons re-released. I've read that some of the moulds were damaged or lost, and I may be the total market for a Morris Marina model. What I really want is the Ford Capri and Ford Escort. (I know the latter was in last year's three car special set, so I'll see if I can pick up one of those.) I don't have any plans for these in figure terms, just an abiding fondness formed from reading Street Machine and Custom Car in my youth. Whilst we're about it, let's have a Ford Pop (Anglia in the States, I think) in that scale. I know there was a 1:24th, or 1:25th van version by one of the US manufacturers, but let's have the saloon beloved of British hotrodders.
3. Photoetched parts for 1:72nd scale cars such as the ones from Cararama. You can get them for 1:87th cars (and, a little, for 1:76th ones as well), so let's have them for my braille scale of choice. I'm going to start producing transfers and stuff again, so one day I may be the person who satisfies this desire. (Affiliate link Cararama 1:72nd cars on EBay)
4. Retro robo. This is a personal project, I don't want anyone to produce it. I just need to find an appropriate Japanese robot to kit bash and lots of spare parts to use in the bashing.
5. Preiser 1:72nd stuff. I know they do a lot of good stuff in this scale, I just can't find it in my local model shops.
That's what I want right now. That, and the money to afford it all.

Coop's uploading dozens of photos a day. They're all interesting and loads of them are relevant as photo reference (some of them include naked ladies, which is cool too). Subscribe to his feed if you're interested in hot rods.
A set that I think went up today is of, as he puts it "Some bad photos of vintage model kits I have assembled in a sloppy fashion."

Hot Rod TV has a short clip on the early history of belly tank racers on the salt flats.
An extract from a history of belly tank racers. This disagrees with the video on one small detail. It says the first tanks used were from Mustangs, before moving onto Lightnings, whilst the video says they went straight to Lightnings.
The Monster Garage TV show made a belly tank racer from an F4 Phantom tank.
It should be possible to find a belly tank from the spares box if you've built enough Second World War era fighters, though it will probably be in a non-traditional scale for car modelling. A 1:48th speedster could be tended to by remodelled air crew, but a 1:72nd one would be tiny- though I guess that makes it more of a challenge.
Update There are belly tank racer models available. This online magazine (pdf) has a feature on one modeller's attempts and the three resulting models.

I'd like to make a model of one of these some day. It's a dry lake racer with a body fashioned from an aeroplane droop tank. Coop was out at a meet at El Mirage yesterday and has a set of photos on Flickr of the hot rods, motor bikes and people who were there.

This hot rod club display is based around a neat idea. One partially built 1940 Ford has been set up to look like a kit, complete with modelling tools, paint and brushes, and the completed cars lined up before it. On a table in front of the display are a collection of 1:25th scale models built and painted to look like the club cars.
It makes a lot more sense when you see the pictures.
